Practical Leadership Strategies for Supporting Mental Health

Human Resource Services - Organizational Development, Equity and Health in partnership with the University’s EFAP program provider, offers Practical Strategies for Supporting Workplace Mental Health in the Workplace. This session is intended for managers/supervisors at all levels as well as human resource professionals involved in advising managers/supervisors.

Mental health in the workplace is a particularly timely and important topic. The University's disability absence statistics show that across the University we have experienced an increase in General Illness and Medical Leave absences due to mental health issues in 2015 and this trend is continuing based on statistics for the first 6 months of 2016. The 3 year average for the University is 28%. As well, the majority of Long Term Disability claims are for mental health reasons (45.5%). The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that 25% of Canada’s working population is affected by mental health issues.

Prioritize and sustain student, faculty, and staff health, wellness, and safety by delivering proactive, relevant, responsive and accessible services and initiatives.Objective 19 in the Public Good, emphasizes  the importance of the health and well being of all members of our community.

This workshop will assist you in understanding, and how to effectively respond to, mental health issues that you encounter in your role. It will provide practical strategies on how to approach these issues and what actions are most effective in supporting a staff member in remaining at work or returning to work. Offerings of the workshop will be communicated in the University digest communications.
