Continuing Employment Beyond Age 65

Staff members age 65 and older, who continue to work in an eligible employment category, continue to participate in the University’s group benefit plans.

Coverage under Supplementary Health and Dental will continue for you and your eligible dependents. However the adjudication of health and dental claims upon 65th birthday of you or your spouse will change. At this juncture all medical services must be submitted to Alberta Blue Cross Senior’s program for determination as to whether any portion of the cost will be eligible for reimbursement under their plan. After expenses have been adjudicated by Alberta Blue Cross, you are then in a position to submit any residual amount to Sun Life for reimbursement.

In the case of prescription medication, it may be possible for the pharmacist to electronically submit the claim under both Alberta Blue Cross and your Sun Life plan provided by the University of Alberta. If the pharmacist is unable to submit electronically under both plans it will be necessary to complete an Extended Health Claim Form. Send the completed form along with the receipt from the pharmacy for the portion of the prescription unpaid by Alberta Blue Cross and submit to the Sun Life for reimbursement.

Benefit Plan


Long Term Disability Insurance Coverage ceases June 30th following 65th birthday for an academic staff employee. Coverage ceases the end of the month of 65th birthday for a support staff employee.
Pension Plan You are not required to retire at age 65. However, for academic staff you must apply to receive your UAPP benefit by December 31st of the year in which you turn 69. Support staff employees must apply to receive their PSPP benefit prior to December 31st of the year in which they turn 71.
Basic Life Insurance Coverage ceases when the staff member reaches age 75. 
Optional Life Insurance Coverage ceases when the staff member reaches age 75.
Optional Dependent Life Coverage ceases when the staff member reaches age 75.
Critical Illness Mandatory Coverage ceases when the staff member reaches age 75.
Voluntary Critical Illness Coverage ceases when the staff member reaches age 75.
Alberta Health and Wellness Alberta Health and Wellness will contact you 6 months prior to your 65th birthday regarding application for Alberta Blue Cross Senior’s Benefits.
Canada Pension Plan (CPP)

You have the option of applying for benefits to commence the month following your 65th birthday or continue to contribute until age 71.

Old Age Security (OAS) You are entitled to receive Old Age Security in addition to CPP at age 65 regardless of whether or not employment continues.
