Message from Co-Chief Residents Derek Chan and Kristen Timm
On behalf of the Family Medicine Residents' Association (FMRA), thank you for your interest in our program.
The University of Alberta Family Medicine Residency Program offers a diversity of clinical experiences that can be tailored to suit your area of interest. We offer powerful teaching frameworks in settings such as the inner city, academic centres, Edmonton community clinics, as well as a variety of more remote locations to provide you with a training site similar to your anticipated future practice setting. Our robust training includes guaranteed exposure to acute care and prepares family doctors to work in any setting.
Our educational curriculum is strongly grounded in Evidence Based Medicine and is supported by physicians well known for their involvement in medical research. Academic training is focused on the 99 Core Competencies in Family Medicine. Some clinical rotations can be adapted into a longitudinal experience to create a more integrated program, recognizing the diversity of Family Medicine. Furthermore, horizontal electives allow a unique perspective on specialty clinics, with the goal of increasing your skills and gaining an understanding of referral criteria and the multidisciplinary healthcare team. We are fortunate to have a dynamic and supportive Program Director, Dr. John Chmelicek, who is very open and receptive to resident feedback and strives to constantly improve our program.
On the lighter side, Family Medicine residents at the U of A know how to have fun! Through orientation activities, monthly social events, a Wilderness Retreat, and our annual FREEZER Conference, there are many opportunities to meet and enjoy time with colleagues.
All the best,
Derek and Kristen
