Message from Dr. Lillian Au
Welcome to the Undergraduate Education Section of the University of Alberta's Department of Family Medicine (DFM) website. Family medicine is the cornerstone of healthcare and we are proud of our skilled and enthusiastic family physicians. We are excited to have you work with, and learn from family docs throughout your medical training. General practitioners comprise a large part of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry contributing as small-group facilitators, lecturers, course co-ordinators, and as preceptors for your Longitudinal Clinical Experience in Family Medicine (LCE-FM) and Clerkship rotations.
The department strives to provide an educational experience that demonstrates and models the broad scope of general and comprehensive family practice (grounded on the Four Principles of Family Medicine, and on the CanMEDS-FM educational framework). The family medicine experience emphasizes the development of proficiency required of a skilled clinician who utilizes an effective doctor-patient relationship in a community based setting, acting as a resource to a defined practice population.
Family physicians are problem solvers and critical thinkers who work across the whole province to provide care for patients and their families in communities, clinics, hospitals, and ER settings. They must maintain their vast knowledge-base and skills in communication, teamwork, primary prevention, acute and chronic disease management, obstetrical/pediatric and geriatric care. General practitioners work tirelessly to improve timely access to healthcare and advocate for patient-centred care in the medical home. Welcome to family medicine.
