Clinical Teaching

Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE) in Family Medicine
September - May
Eight half-day session in year 1 of medical school; Eight half-day sessions in year 2 of medical school.

Observe and practice patient communication and exam skills. Role model family practice. Impact on clinic operations should be minimal. An orientation and course manual are provided.

Clinical Electives
Year-round, two-week duration
Year 3 & 4 students looking for experiential opportunities and increased exposure to family medicine.

3rd Year Family Medicine Clerkship (in Edmonton area and rural regional Alberta)
Year-round, four-week duration
Clinical Preceptors mentor and supervise senior medical students in their offices. Clerkship rotations are eight weeks in duration and divided between urban and rural locations.

Small Group Teaching on the U of A Campus

Communication Sessions
September to April
Four hours per session
Teaching year 1 to 4 medical students in regard to history taking, clinical decision-making and shared decision-making. Each group consists of four medical students and one facilitator. Cases and materials are provided.

Physical Exams Session
September to April
Four hours per session
Teaching physical examination skills to a set curriculum.

Physicianship Discussion Groups (PDG)
September to April
Two hours per session
Twenty sessions spaced over four years working with a group of 8 - 10 medical students supported by a semi-structured manual. Most sessions are in the students' first two years. Provides ideal environment to stimulate discussion about various topics that will help form the students' physician identity and provides a unique opportunity to mentor a group of medical students over the course of their training.
