Enhanced Skills Training in Primary Care Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM)

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta offers Enhanced Skills training (at a PGY 3 level) in primary care Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). This is a funded one-year program beginning in July of each year.

Our goal is that an SEM graduate from our program will be competent in the following areas:

  • MSK assessment and treatment
  • Sideline emergency assessment and return-to-play decisions
  • Common SEM procedures and use of ultrasound
  • The education of patients, learners and the community on topics relevant to SEM
  • Participation in research analysis and clinical studies
  • Providing medical support as a team physician
  • Being a collaborative team member
  • The practice of family medicine
