About

International House Welcome MessageI-House Alberta opened September 4, 2004. As a joint initiative of Ancillary Services and University of Alberta International, and member of International Houses Worldwide, I-House is a unique community of residents and alumni who carry forth a century-old legacy of peacebuilding through global friendships.

I-House is one of seventeen members of International Houses Worldwide (IHWW), and the only one in Canada.

We are dedicated to the IHWW mission:

To provide students of different nationalities and diverse cultures with the opportunity to live and learn together in a community of mutual respect, understanding and international friendship.

I-House at the University of Alberta adds another element to this mission: a global education mandate.

Our vision is to be:

An intentional community built upon respect and openness that fosters global citizenship, socially responsible leadership, and enduring friendships.

Our objectives are:

  • To provide Canadian and international students an opportunity to live and learn together in a supportive and stimulating environment and thereby build enduring friendships among residents.

  • To promote understanding of the global community and promote awareness, understanding, and respect for cultural diversity; enhance student intercultural competencies; recognize that all members of the global community share equal rights and responsibilities for each other; and cultivate educated and socially responsible leaders.

  • To enhance the academic and professional success of the residents.

We believe that every resident brings unique gifts to the community; by working together in harmony, we can help every member feel at home. I-House residents enjoy life together and thereby access creative ideas both for daily joy and solutions to the most pressing issues of our time.
