GSA Appeals and Complaints Board

Opportunity to Serve: Three (3) Graduate Student

The GSA Nominating Committee (GSA NoC) invites nominations from graduate students to serve on the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board (GSA ACB). Three (3) positions are available.

If you are interested in putting your name forward to serve on this committee, please fill out the bio and resume form attached and email it to gsa.nomcomm@ualberta.ca by, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 at 12:00 PM (Noon).

All nominees will be interviewed by the GSA Nominating Committee on 13, 14 or 15 November 2018, and the selected nominees' names and bios will be forwarded as submitted via email to GSA Council for a paper ballot vote.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to be neutral;
  • Capacity for acting impartially;
  • Capacity for reserving judgment until all parties have been heard;
  • Independent thinking.

Eligibility

  • Has not run in the last General Election;
  • No intention to run in the next General Election or By-Election.

Purpose and Mandate of the GSA ACB:

"The GSA Appeals and Complaints Board (GSA ACB) is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals of GSA Chief Returning Officer (CRO) decisions and complaints about GSA Officers and Councillors-at-Large (CALs) as allowed by Section 94(3) of the Post-Secondary Learning Act." (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, Section H.POL.6.1).

Training and Meetings

Members must be available during February-March 2019 for the GSA General Election. The GSA Executive Director or delegate will provide training on procedural fairness to all committee members.

Please note that "Members must come from a broad range of departments and may stand for re-election" (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, section H.POL.8.2.)


As such, priority for this position will be given to nominees from a department not currently represented on the GSA ACB. We currently have members from the following departments: Business, Pediatrics, Oncology, Renewable Resources, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Linguistics, Earth and Atmospheric Science, Humanities Computing, and Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences.


Note: "The President, Vice-Presidents, other Elected Officers, Councillors-at-Large, and GSA Elections and Referenda Committee members may not serve on the GSA ACB" (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, Section H.POL.10.5).



The GSA NoC will forward the names of the approved nominees to GSA Council for an election during the 19 November 2018 meeting.
