GSA Elections and Referenda Committee

Opportunity to Serve: One (1) Graduate Student

The GSA Nominating Committee (GSA NoC) invites nominations from graduate students to serve on the GSA Elections and Referenda Committee (GSA ERC). One (1) position is available. The term for this position begins 1 October 2019.

Purpose and Mandate of the GSA ERC:

The GSA ERC consults with the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) on all matters pertaining to GSA Elections, By-Elections, and Referenda. The GSA ERC meets at least one month prior to the opening of nominations for the GSA General Election to assist the CRO in the planning of election events, advises the CRO on all matters pertaining to the GSA General Election, reviews GSA Elections and Referenda Bylaw and Policy annually, and makes any recommendations for changes to GSA Council (Section I: Elections, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Elections and Referenda Committee).

Meetings

GSA ERC meets throughout the fall and winter to plan the 2020 GSA General Election, and in the spring following the GSA General Election to debrief. Members should also be available during the GSA General Election (which will take place in February 2020) and for any Referenda or By-Elections in order to be able to advise the CRO.


Eligibility

"All members of the GSA are eligible to serve on the GSA ERC unless they intend to run in the General Election or by-election, intend to support a position in an upcoming referendum, or they have run in the previous General Election or by-election or supported a position in the last referendum. If standing for election to the GSA ERC, GSA ERC candidates agree not to campaign for or endorse any individual running in the General Election or by-election. GSA ERC members must also be neutral and impartial (eg having no immediate or vested interest in the outcome of GSA Elections and Referenda)." Note: Graduate students may not serve on both the GSA ERC and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board (GSA ACB).

Composition

The GSA ERC is composed of the CRO, and Deputy Returning Officer as non-voting members, and six (6) voting members, including at least one (1) GSA Councillor. The members are elected by GSA Council. The GSA ERC Chair and Vice-Chair are elected from amongst the six (6) voting members (Section I: Elections, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Elections and Referenda Committee, section I.POL.17).
