Opportunity to Serve: One (1) Graduate Student

The GSA Speaker Pranidhi Baddam and GSA Executive Director Courtney Thomas invite nominations from graduate students to serve on the GSA Nominating Committee (GSA NoC). One (1) position is available.

If you are interested in putting your name forward to serve on this committee, please fill out the bio and resume form attached and email it to gsa.nomcomm@ualberta.ca by, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 at 12 PM (Noon).

Nominations received will be circulated as submitted via email to GSA Council.

Purpose and Mandate of the GSA NoC

The GSA NoC is charged with selecting graduate student representatives to councils, committees, and other bodies requiring such representation. The GSA NoC also leads an annual initiative in October known as the "Early Call for Talent and Training" during which graduate students interested in running for elected office are invited to attend a Get-to-Know Dinner and a series of training sessions (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section E: Nominating, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Nominating Committee, Sections E.POL.8.2 and E.POL.8.7).

Meetings

As provided for in GSA Policy, much of the work of the GSA NoC is done via e-mail. In-person meetings are called when new members join the committee and as needed (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section E: Nominating, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Nominating Committee, Section E.POL.9.1 and Section E.POL.9.2). In addition, members of GSA NoC conduct in-person interviews of all nominees for vacancies on the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board (GSA ACB) (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complains Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, Section H.POL.9.4).

Eligibility

"All members of the GSA are eligible to serve on the GSA NoC unless they intend to run in the GSA General Election or by-election, intend to serve as a Campaign Representative or volunteer in an upcoming referendum, or they have run in the previous GSA General Election or by-election or served as a Campaign Representative or volunteer in the last referendum. If standing for election to the GSA NoC, GSA NoC nominees agree not to campaign for or endorse any individual running in the GSA General Election or by-election, and not to serve as a Campaign Representative or volunteer in any referendum." (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section E: Nominating, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Nominating Committee, Section E.POL.6.1).

The composition of the GSA NoC can be found here. Associated GSA Bylaw and Policy can be found here.

There will be a paper ballot vote at the 16 September 2019 GSA Council meeting.
