Vacancy:

1 position for a graduate student, who is a GSA member, on the GSA ACB. Terms for positions on the GSA ACB will last 1 or 2 years.

How To Apply:

Nominations are to be submitted by filling out the attached form and emailing it to gsa.nomcomm@ualberta.ca in advance of the deadline of Tuesday, 10 November 2020 at 12:00 PM (Noon). Nominations received will be circulated as submitted via email to GSA Council.

All nominees will be interviewed, remotely, by the GSA Nominating Committee on 11 or 12 November 2020, and the selected nominees' names and bios will be forwarded as submitted via email to GSA Council for an electronic vote on 16 November 2020.


Purpose and Mandate:

"The GSA Appeals and Complaints Board (GSA ACB) is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals of GSA Chief Returning Officer (CRO) decisions and complaints about GSA Officers and Councillors-at-Large (CALs) as allowed by Section 94(3) of the Post-Secondary Learning Act". (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, Section H.POL.6.1). Composition:

The composition and scope of the GSA ACB can be found here. Please note that "members must come from a broad range of departments and may stand for re-election" (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, section H.POL.7.2.)

As such, priority for this position will be given to nominees from a department not currently represented on the GSA ACB. We currently have members from the following departments: Human Ecology, Pharmacology, Digital Humanities, Neuroscience, Chemical & Materials Engineering, Public Health, Business, Education, and Nursing.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to be neutral;
  • Capacity for acting impartially;
  • Capacity for reserving judgment until all parties have been heard; and
  • Independent thinking.

Eligibility

  • Must have no intention to run in or serve as a Campaign Volunteer in the upcoming GSA General Election and/or by-election;
  • Must have no intention to serve as a Campaign Representative or Campaign Volunteer in an upcoming referendum; and
  • Must not have run in the most recent GSA General Election and/or by-election.

Note: "The President, Vice-Presidents, other Elected Officers, Councillors-at-Large, and GSA Elections and Referenda Committee members may not serve on the GSA ACB" (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section H: Performance, Conduct, Responsibilities, and Attendance, and the GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, GSA Appeals and Complaints Board, Section H.POL.9.5).

Training and Meetings:

Members must be available during the GSA General Election and Referenda process.

The GSA Executive Director or delegate will provide training on procedural fairness to all committee members.
