GSA Council-Elected Officers

Vacancy:

1 vacancy in each of the following 3 positions (otherwise known as GSA Council-Elected Officers): Senator, Deputy Speaker, and Deputy Returning Officer (DRO).

How To Apply:

Nominations must be submitted in writing (using the attached forms specific to each position) to gsa.nomcomm@ualberta.ca by Wednesday, 16 November 2022 at 12:00 PM (Noon).

All nominations received will be circulated as submitted to GSA Council. 

Overview of Position

 

Senator:

The Senator acts as the GSA’s representative to the University of Alberta Senate. The Senator is a non-voting member of the GSA Board (GSAB). As a Council-Elected Officer, the Senator is also a non-voting member of the GSA Council.

 

Deputy Speaker:

Assists the Speaker as needed. The Speaker presides over all meetings of GSA Council, and is a non-voting member of the GSA Board (GSAB). The Speaker is awarded a modest honorarium for overseeing meetings of GSA Council.

 

DRO:

Assists the CRO as needed, is a non-voting member of GSA ERC, and "must be physically present in Edmonton or surrounding areas for the duration of any GSA General Election, by-election, and/or referendum."

The CRO oversees all GSA elections and referenda (hence the requirement to be physically present in the Edmonton region), is a non-voting member of the GSA Elections and Referenda Committee (GSA ERC).

Meetings

Senator:

  • Senate Plenary meetings are held approximately 4 times a year on a Thursday evening and continue the following Friday morning. The dates for the 2022-2023 year are as follows:
    • September 22-23, 2022 (4:30PM-6:30PM, 8:00AM-12:00PM)
    • December 1-2, 2022 (4:30PM-6:30PM, 8:00AM-12:00PM)
    • March 2-3, 2023 (4:30PM-6:30PM, 8:00AM-12:00PM)
    • May 4-5, 2023 (4:30PM-6:30PM, 8:00AM-12:00PM)
  • Additionally, the GSA Senator may serve on up to three (3) Senate committees.
  • The Senator also attends GSA Council (dates can be found hereand the GSA Board (not mandatory; meets weekly on Wednesdays from 10 AM to 12 PM) as a non-voting member of both.

Deputy Speaker:

  • GSA Council meetings take place monthly on Mondays at 6 PM (dates can be found here).
  • A pre-Council meeting takes place on the same day at 4 PM.

DRO:

  • GSA Council meetings take place monthly on Mondays at 6 PM (dates can be found here).
  • May be invited to a pre-Council meeting (on the same day at 4 PM).
  • GSA ERC meetings will take place regularly between October and March to assist with the 2023 GSA General Election (held February/March), and as needed throughout the rest of the year.

Election Process:

All nominations received will be circulated as submitted via email to GSA Council for an election during the 21 November 2022 meeting of GSA Council. Nominees will be invited to deliver brief remarks to GSA Council and answer questions from members. If nominees are unable to attend and would like to address GSA Council, alternate arrangements can be made.
