Richard Kanyo

Richard Kanyo, PhD

Dr. Richard Kanyo is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biological Sciences and the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases. His project focuses on the role of cellular prion protein in neuroprotection and is currently implementing a novel calcium integrator to measure neural activity in zebrafish. He is also the President of the Postdoctoral Fellow Association (PDFA) and the Vice-President of Edmonton's Hungarian Cultural Society.

He lived in three different countries (6 years in Romania, 12 years in Germany and the last 17 years in Canada) and can relate well with the challenges of moving around the world to pursue better opportunities. Prior his postdoctoral appointment, he completed all of his post-secondary education at the University of Alberta. As a graduate student, he has served on several committees, where he was involved in developing by-laws and policies for the Graduate Student Association. Dr. Kanyo was also a Scientific Advisor for Quantum Design and Technologies Inc. and was involved in building R & D programs for the oil and gas industry with a focus on fracing. With a broad experience and having spent 16 years on the U of A campus, he is excited to contribute to our research and learning environment.
