Firouz is a PhD candidate in Mining Engineering at the University of Alberta. He completed his undergraduate and Masters’ degrees in mining engineering and feasibility studies in Iran. During his MSc, he worked at the Technology Development Center at Tarbiat Modares University which gave him the opportunity to experience academia’s collaboration with industry and the public sector. After finishing his Masters, Firouz started his professional career as a Mining Engineer, and after one year he was promoted to serve as the head of the Mine Planning and Optimization department in KMCE (one of the top three consulting engineering companies in Iran). He has been active in student politics since his undergraduate years, has been a teaching assistant since 2014, a research assistant in the Mining Optimization Laboratory, and an active volunteer in the community. Firouz has been the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 Vice-President Academic of the GSA. He also has served as: Vice-President External and councillor for the Civil and Environmental Engineering GSA; member of GSA Award Selection Committee; and member of the Green and Gold Adjudication Committee.
