  • Application Procedures

Students submit a completed application to their department.

The department then forwards applications – up to a maximum of one NSERC application – to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research by the University deadline (determined by the FGSR). There is no limit on the number of CIHR Applications that can be forwarded to FGSR.

Departments, please consult the detailed memo in Nomination Procedures on this page.

A complete application includes the following:

    • Application form (found on the respective NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR websites)
    • Letter from current research supervisor
    • Letter from host supervisor indicating the resources available to support student’s planned research activities; non-academic host supervisors must demonstrate they have experience supervising graduate student research
    • Consent to Disclosure of Personal Information Form
    • For CGS-M and Vanier CGS recipients, a copy of the latest updated CGS project proposal must also be included

For detailed application requirements, please visit the appropriate federal government granting agency website and read through the instructions and application form online.

  • Nomination Procedures
    Please see MEMO.
  • Adjudication Procedures
Once received at the FGSR, nominations are adjudicated by a committee for eligibility and appropriateness. Recommended applications are forwarded to NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR for consideration. Winners will be contacted directly by the agency, and FGSR will facilitate any revisions required. Winners must apprise FGSR of any changes to their outlined itineraries.
  • Deadlines

The deadline for departments to submit applications to FGSR is May 22, 2017 at 4:00pm MST. Departments may set an earlier internal deadline to receive applications from students and conduct internal adjudication. Please see the Nomination Procedures section on this page to view the new competition memo.

There are a maximum of 2 granting agency deadlines: June 10 and October 10 annually.

If an institution's allocation for CGS-MSFSS has been reached by the June 10 deadline, there may not be an opportunity for further applications to be accepted at the October 10 deadline, but FGSR will publicize this, if it is the case.

If, however, a granting agency’s total CGS-MSFSS allocation has not been reached by the October 10 deadline, an additional opportunity for further applications may be added in February, as appropriate.

FGSR is also able to submit alternates for consideration for each deadline.
