Managing Up Workshop Series

Bring your lunch and learn to manage up! Please join us for this upcoming professional development workshop series held Thursdays at lunchtime, brought to you by Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) and the Graduate Students' Association (GSA). 

These workshops may be used towards the Professional Development (PD) Requirement. All professional development sessions or activities must be approved by your department.

Managing up: Effective meetings and the art of asking 

Productive meetings usually leave people energized and enthusiastic for their next steps, so what is the magic ingredient? There are a number of strategies you can employ to have an effective meeting where you can raise questions and concerns.  Come find out how you can have more clearly defined outcomes in your meetings.

Managing up: Developing self-expectations and clarity of responsibilities in graduate school

How can I navigate the balance of responsibilities between me and my supervisor?   How do I communicate openly and respectfully with my supervisor, laboratory mates, or research team members?  What are my healthy boundaries between work and the rest of life?  How do I manage my work load and recognize my limitations, and continue on a path of success in graduate school?

Managing up: Getting the most out of your graduate school learning experience and accomplishments along the way

This session will address how you can "manage up" as a graduate student by deliberately choosing learning experiences, setting goals, and meeting those goals.  This session will be lead by a professor who has examined how graduate students succeed in graduate school and get the most out of their learning opportunities, challenges, interactions with others, and discipline.  Kevin will shares recommended "do's" and "don'ts" for graduate students in how they interact with their supervisors.
