The Graduate Student Internship Program (GSIP) provides funding for employers to hire a graduate student to solve a staffing or business need. Employers in all sectors can participate, including private, public and not-for-profit.
Benefits for the Employer
- Wage subsidy; Receive 50 cents on every dollar you can put towards a student's salary (Up to $8,000)
- Access to hard-working, driven, curious, resourceful and intelligent students to fulfill your business needs
- The opportunity to shape your industry's incoming workforce and get to know future graduates
About the Funding Model
GSIP is based on a cost-matching funding model. FGSR will provide up to $8000 in funding for each placement. The employer is required to match this, for a maximum total of $16,000 for the student.
GSIP funding, provided by a Government of Alberta grant, is intended to give graduate students access to new work experience opportunities and help bridge the gap between academic studies and the work place.
Students are to be paid a minimum of $25/ hour (before deductions) for the duration of the placement. FGSR will contribute $12.50/hour up to $8000.
If both the employer and the University of Alberta contribute $8,000 each, a student can be hired for 640 hours.
