  • Step 1: Confirm you are Eligible

    Eligible applicants must:

    • Be a registered University of Alberta Master's or PhD student
    • Be enrolled full-time or part-time in a University of Alberta graduate degree program when applying for an internship. (Students may convocate during the internship, but should be a registered student for at least half of the internship.)

    Please Note:

    • University of Alberta Graduate students on a Study Permit are eligible to work up to 40 hours per week on campus and up to 20 hours per week off campus.
    • Funding is available for employers to hire an intern for up to 640 hours. Students are paid a minimum of $25/hour.

  • Step 2: Access Resources and Support to Apply for Internships

When applying for internships or other employment opportunities, we recommend visiting the University of Alberta Career Centre in the Students' Union Building or visiting the FGSR Professional Development website for resources and support with writing your resume/CV and cover letter in preparing for an interview.

  • Step 3: Apply for Internships
Graduate students interested in applying for GSIP internships should watch for information about GSIP postings on the FGSR and Career Centre websites and e-newsletters. Students may apply for any GSIP internship for which they are qualified by following the instructions in the job posting; however due to limited funding, each student is limited to only one GSIP work placement during their graduate degree program. Employers will contact the students they would like to interview.

Available internships can be viewed under the GSIP heading in campusBRIDGE. New opportunities will be posted as they become available throughout the year.

Graduate students interested in GSIP internships are encouraged to complete a short survey to help us understand your career development needs and goals.
  • Step 4: Fullfill Internship Requirements

Successful student interns are expected to fulfill the job requirements for the duration of the internship while carrying out their academic requirements.

Students are encouraged to access the resources on campus available through the Career Centre, FGSR, the Student Success Centre, and elsewhere, to help balance work and academic responsibilities and to make the most of their experience.

To ensure a successful internship, the student is expected to:

    • Meet with their internship supervisor assigned by the employer to clarify responsibilities and identify learning outcomes
    • Complete any agreed-upon deliverables within the internship duration
    • Submit hours worked to the supervisor
    • Participate in assessment activities with GSIP staff to evaluate the placement and program
