MA in Classical Languages

The information found on this web-page is intended to complement rather than substitute information contained in the University Calendar. In the event that there is a discrepancy the University of Alberta Calendar is the final authority.

Entrance Requirements

In addition to general Departmental requirements, students must have a BA with a major in Classics, and have completed the equivalent of GREEK 302 and LATIN 302 and a combined 9 at the 400-level in GREEK and/or LATIN.

Students who have less preparation in the languages, but are otherwise well qualified for graduate study, may be considered for admission to other programs (including the MA in Ancient Societies and Cultures) and may transfer into the Classical Languages program if they achieve a level of preparation equivalent to the combined entrance and program requirements for that program.

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 28 including both coursework and a Directed Research Project.

Coursework (★22)

At least five 3 graduate-level courses in GREEK or LATIN

Three courses must be in one of GREEK or LATIN; two courses must be in the other

Two additional 3 graduate-level courses in CLASS, GREEK, and/or LATIN

A graduate-level course from outside Classics may be substituted for one of these, subject to approval of the Department

CLASS 501 (1)

Directed Research Project (★6)

Students must successfully complete two consecutive registrations of 3 in CLASS 900, which requires a research paper of 40-50 pages. When the student has finished the research paper, it is to be submitted to the supervisor and a second reader. The second reader is normally another member of the Department, and is chosen by the supervisor in consultation with the student. Each reader then provides the Graduate Chair with a short (normally half page) assessment of the paper outlining its purpose, scope, and result, and indicating whether it is a pass or fail

Ethics Requirement

Students must complete INT D 710, a 6-hour, self-paced online course by the end of their first semester in the program.

Professional Development Requirement

Students fulfill four hours of the FGSR Professional Development Requirement through HIST 602 if it is taken as part of their doctoral program. See the FGSR website for more information.

Modern Language Requirement

Students must demonstrate competence in French, German or Italian according to the procedures specified in the Departmental Language Requirement.

Length of Program

The MA in Classical Languages usually requires a minimum of 15-18 months to be completed, depending on the student's preparation and course selection.
