Frances Pownall is thrilled to announce the publication of the recent volume she co-edited with Sulochana Asirvatham and Sabine Müller, The Courts of Philip II and Alexander the Great: Monarchy and Power in Ancient Macedonia. The aim of the volume is to explore the role of Philip II and Alexander the Great, who transformed Macedonia into the ancient equivalent of a superpower, in the development of a court culture and ruling ideology that exerted a profound influence on later periods. The volume includes a chapter by Dr. Steven Hijmans, and a number of departmental members (both faculty and graduate students) contributed in various ways to the international conference held in Edmonton in 2018 where the papers for this volume were originally presented. The cover features a coin (image used with permission) held in the W.G. Hardy Collection of Ancient Near Eastern and Classical Antiquities, housed in the department.
