GREEK 477 - Topics in Greek Prose  *3 (3-0-0)

Prerequiste for all 400-level courses is GREEK 302 or consent of the Department.

Topic: Plato's Protagoras

Description:  In this seminar we will read in its entirety (in Greek) Plato’s Protagoras, a dialogue pitting the Athenian philosopher Socrates against the itinerant sophist Protagoras. The dialogue covers a large range of topics (political theory, education, literary theory, and the first appearance of social contract theory), all presented through the parry and thrust of dialectic and the pyrotechnical bravura of rhetoric. The discussion is wide-ranging but ultimately focuses upon the notion of ‘excellence’ (aretē) and whether it is a unity and can in fact be taught.
