Latin 410 - Topics in Latin Prose

Title: Sallust: Historian of the Roman Republic

Description: Sallust (aka C. Sallustius Crispus), a former senator and lieutenant of Julius Caesar, is our first surviving major Roman historian and the only one to write during the Republican period. He details the effects of imperialism and political breakdown on Roman society in the last generations before Caesar and Augustus. We will read selections from his Catiline, War against Jugurtha and Histories in the original Latin, with close attention both to grammar, literary artistry and historical detail.
