CLASS 103 INTRO TO ANCIENT GREECE *3 (3-0-0)

This course is designed as an introduction to the world of Ancient Greece, from its emergence as a Bronze Age culture in the 3rd millennium down to its loss of independence in the first centuries A.D. We will be making use of a variety of historical, literary and archaeological sources to survey, temporally and thematically, Ancient Greek history, mythology, religion, politics and culture. Formerly CLASS 270.

Who was Oedipus, and why is there a complex named after him? Why did the Athenians execute the philosopher Socrates? And why did the Greeks invent philosophy in the first place? Why were the Spartans so warlike? Why was Alexander “great”? What was the “heroic code”? Why did the Greeks have so many gods?

For answers to these questions and anything else you wanted to know about Ancient Greece, take CLASS 103 this spring. For further information, contact Dr. Frances Pownall (frances.pownall@ualberta.ca).
