In Memoriam: Guy Thompson (June 27, 1964 - May 10, 2019)

21 June 2019

It is with great sadness that the Department of History and Classics announces the passing of our colleague Dr. Guy Thompson, who died suddenly on May 10, 2019, at the age of 54.

Guy is survived by his beloved daughter Rosie, sisters Stacy (Eric) and Meghan (Philip), brother Rob, niece Sarah and nephew Jonathan.

Guy was an historian of modern Africa who earned his PhD at the University of Minnesota and joined the faculty at the University of Alberta in the same year. He was a specialist on Zimbabwe, with interests in agricultural and environmental history, education, colonialism, masculinity, and the nature of authoritarian politics. He published his scholarship in venues including the International Review of Social History, and was also sought after for media comment. He was a highly regarded teacher in a wide range of courses in history, sociology, and in the program of Middle Eastern and African Studies. He was a friendly and generous person who was always ready for a conversation, and we will miss both his personality and his expertise in the department.
