Exceptions to wearing masks while working on campus

Staying safe while accommodating the diverse needs of our staff

14 September 2020

As the new term starts and some faculty and staff return to campus, remind faculty and staff that face masks are required in common areas inside buildings such as lobbies, hallways, stairwells, restroom, elevators, kitchens and other areas that are shared with others to comply with safety measures general directives on personal protective equipment.

If a staff or faculty member expresses concerns about wearing a mask, explore the matter and review the exception procedure. If the employee’s concern relates to a physical or mental health condition, detailed medical information from their physician will be required. Homewood Health will assist with gathering the necessary medical information and provide a recommendation.

In some cases, it may be appropriate to modify their work or work location. For example, a desk location may be switched so that the staff member can maintain a two-metre distance from others and not need to wear the face mask continually. In other cases, a more formal accommodation may be required. Please email recovery@ualberta.ca if you have questions about accommodations.
