Holiday Pay

Paid Holidays are the actual days these holidays fall on:
  • New Year's Day
  • Alberta Family Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • Heritage Day (civic holiday)
  • Labour Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Remembrance Day
  • Christmas Day

Where a paid holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the paid holiday will be observed on the following Monday. These are considered Designated Paid Days Off and are treated as a Rest Day under the terms of the Collective Agreements and Handbooks. Visit Statutory Holidays and Winter Closure for this years' dates.

Eligibility

All employees listed in the table below are eligible for general holiday pay. 

  • All employees at the university observe general holidays. 
  • An employee is eligible from date of hire as long as they were active and accountable on the general holiday
  • Hourly employees will receive stat pay based on their prior earnings
  • Part time salaried employee eligibility is based on their schedule
  • In order to be eligible, the employee is require to work the scheduled day before and after the holiday

Calculation

  • General holiday pay is calculated at 5% of an employee's wages, vacation pay and stat pay  earned in the previous 4 weeks (2 pay periods for semi-monthly or 1 pay period for Monthly) immediately preceding the holiday.
  • General Holiday pay is only paid in the pay period that the holiday occurs.

When the Holiday falls on employees regular scheduled day of work  employee receives a paid day off as part of their salary. No action is required. 

When the Holiday falls on the employees unscheduled day of work (regular day off) General holiday pay is calculated at  5% of an employee's wages, vacation pay and stat pay  earned in the previous 4 weeks (2 pay periods for  semi-monthly or 1 pay period for Monthly) immediately preceding the holiday.

In order to be compensated, the employee, supervisor or timekeeper must record employee’s non scheduled day in the time sheet of 1 unit (not hours) for the day using TRC (Time Recording Code) 072

Working on a Holiday

Meal allowances and breaks are not applicable when the employee works on the statutory holiday.

Working on the Designated Day Off

Treated as a Rest Day and the OT rates plus meal allowance and breaks apply.
