STEP + CSJ Procedures

Definitions

  • STEP - Summer Temporary Employment Program
  • CSJ - Canada Summer Jobs
  • ISWSP - International Student Work Study Program (International Centre)

For STEP and CSJ appointments complete the Employment Programs Appointment/Pay Action Form.

STEP and CSJ subsidized summer employees are subject to the terms and conditions as stated in the BoG/NASA Collective Agreement (Part A for Operating and Part B for Trust) according to their appropriate position types:

  • Casual Level 1
  • Casual Level 1 - U of A Student
  • Casual Level 2
  • Auxiliary

Excluded Student - excluded from the bargaining unit (e.g. Interns, Co-op Students and Practicums)

Contact Support Staff - Employment Services or Human Resource Consulting for additional information on employee types and the corresponding conditions.

STEP and CSJ appointments will be paid on the semi-monthly schedule.

Timesheets

Departments will have to submit the Semi-Monthly Timesheets for all hours worked during a semi-monthly pay period. (See the semi-monthly payroll deadlines). For departments who enter semi-monthly hours into the Weekly Elapsed Time system please follow the keying open and end dates for each semi-monthly pay period.

STEP + CSJ + ISWSP Account Number

  • Account number for Casual Level 1 and Casual Level 1 - FT Student: 500511.
  • Account number for Excluded Students: 500115.

Casual Level 1

  • Benchmark to determine Grade.
  • Option - can pay at least 75% of step 1 on any grade provided that the wage is at least minimum wage.
  • 4% Vacation Pay.
  • 3.46% Stat Holiday Pay.

Casual Level 1 - Full Time U of A Student

  • Benchmark to determine Grade.
  • Option - can pay at least 75% of step 1 on any grade provided that the wage is at least minimum wage.
  • 4% Vacation Pay.
  • 3.46% Stat Holiday Pay.
  • 1.5% Premium Pay.

Excluded Student

  • Alberta Employment Standards - pay at least Alberta minimum wage.
  • 4% Vacation Pay.

Deductions

The following deductions will be automatically processed on each payment:

  • Canadian Income Tax (CIT)
  • Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
  • NASA dues
  • WCB: Workers' Compensation coverage is provided by the applicable employment program.
