Institutional Strategic Plan: For the Public Good

For the Public Good is meant to empower and enable each member of the University of Alberta to build, experience, excel, engage, and sustain. The successful implementation of the plan will depend on all, individually and collectively, taking action.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Strategic Plan

At the University of Alberta, we envision and cultivate a community where equity and diversity are fundamental to inclusive excellence in learning, teaching, research, service, and community engagement. In 2019, the U of A’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity strategic plan was developed. This strategic plan aims to embed equity, diversity, and inclusivity into the culture of the University of Alberta community, from the grassroots to the senior-most levels.

Truth and Reconciliation

The University of Alberta has been working towards implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action in thoughtful, meaningful and sustainable ways. The goal is to ensure that the University of Alberta is a welcoming and safe environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty and community members and that programs and strategies reflect the institutional commitment to engaging, respecting and honoring Indigenous knowledge across the campus community. With that goal in mind, the Indigenous Programming and Research Portfolio was established in the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic).

Ethical Conduct 

University of Alberta Policies and Procedures Online (UAPPOL) is the main repository for institutional policies and guidelines. Your own work unit may also have some specific ones to guide the unique work you do.

Take a look at the Ethical Conduct and the Code of Conduct: Conflicts of Interest pages for an overview of the most important policies related to standards and aspirations for ethical conduct that representatives of the University of Alberta community must uphold.

My Employment

One of the best resources for you as a faculty or staff member of the organization is the Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment Website. This website contains all the important information you will need in regards to your employment with the university. 

We encourage you to look at the Employment Information section of the website, where you will find Onboarding Guides and the Employee self-service link where you can access up-to-date information about your pay and benefits. Also in this section, you will find key policies related to your employment relationship with the university, and links to the collective agreements and employee handbooks.

The Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment website also contains sections on Employee Benefits, Pay & Tax Information, Learning and Development, Health & Wellbeing, and so much more. There are links to campus information so you can easily access important logistical information. A section for News and Updates helps you stay in the loop on important topics and learning opportunities. The QUAD—the U of A’s official faculty and staff blog—and Folio—a newsletter that showcases important initiatives and stories that highlight the expertise of the U of A community.

Professional Development Opportunities 

Developing faculty and staff professionally is important to the university. It is a key strategy in the university’s current strategic plan, For the Public Good. There are over 30 providers of professional development, from safety to teaching to leadership to technology, and so many more. There is bound to be something just for you! 

Professional development (PD) funding and reimbursement is also available for staff to access, so it is important for you to know what is available to learn and what mechanisms there are to pay for it.

In the Learning and Development section of the Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment website, you will find access to register for opportunities via the LearnCentre, see a calendar of upcoming opportunities, and access details of funding programs. You will also be able to learn more about what type of PD programming is available from Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment, and sign up for the professional development mailing list where you will receive a weekly update on what is happening in faculty and staff development.


As an employee of the U of A, you have access to excellent technical support in order to be successful. Information Services and Technology (IST) offers real time, live (either in person, by phone, or webchat) IT assistance to address any needs and challenges you may encounter. They also have an extensive Self-Service Portal, that allows you to access information yourself to address technical needs and challenges.
