Basic Life

This employer paid benefit provides a 2X annual salary lump sum payment to your designated beneficiary(ies) in the event of your death.

Occupational Accidental Death & Dismemberment

This employer benefit provides insurance coverage in the event you suffer accidental death or dismemberment as a result of an accident which occurs while you are at work.

  • Principal Sum of $25,000

In the case of dismemberment a portion of the Principal Sum is payable as outlined in the Benefit Coverage below.

Optional Life

This employee paid benefit provides additional Life Insurance.

  • Available in $10,000 units
  • Minimum 1 unit - $10,000
  • Maximum 50 units - $500,000

*May be required to provide medical evidence of insurability.

Optional Dependent Life

This employee paid benefit provides insurance coverage for your spouse and other eligible dependents over 14 days of age.

  • $15,000 if your spouse should die
  • $ 5,000 for other eligible dependents

*Dependent may be required to provide medical evidence of insurability.

Business Travel Accident

This employer paid benefit provides additional coverage for accidental death or bodily injury which occurs while travelling on business for the University.

  • Principal Sum of $75,000

In the event of dismemberment a portion of the Principal Sum is payable as outlined in the Benefit Coverage below.

Voluntary Accident Insurance Plan (AD/D)

This employee paid benefit provides additional coverage for Accidental Death & Dismemberment, 24 hours per day, both at work and away from work.

  • Available in units of $30,000
  • Minimum 1 unit - $30,000
  • Maximum 16 units - $480,000
  • Employee or Family coverage is available

In the case of dismemberment a portion of total units purchased is payable as outlined in the Benefit Coverage below.

The following table outlines the University of Alberta critical illness insurance benefits available to eligible participants under the University of Alberta Critical Illness Plan. Eligibility is subject to the plan provisions.

This employer paid benefit provides a $100,000 lump sum payment to your designated beneficiary(ies) in the event of your death.

Full-Time Temporary Academic Staff appointed for greater than 8 months but less than 12 months - Provides a $50,000 lump sum payment to your beneficiary(ies) in the event of your death.

Optional Life

This employee paid benefit provides additional Life Insurance.

  • Available in $10,000 units
  • Minimum 1 unit - $10,000
  • Maximum 50 units - $500,000

Basic life insurance 

A total of $100,000 of life insurance can be claimed, and Human Resource Services will submit the claim on behalf of the designated beneficiary(ies). 

Optional life insurance 

You can purchase additional life insurance in $10,000 units up to $500,000.

Evidence of insurability is required for amounts over $180,000 or when applying late. An application is required. 

Optional dependent life insurance

You can purchase this benefit coverage for your spouse and eligible dependents.

  • $15,000 for your spouse
  • $ 5,000 for eligible dependents

Spouse and eligible dependents are required to provide evidence of insurability when applying late. An application is required.

Human Resource Services will submit the claim on behalf of the beneficiary(ies). 

Business travel accident

This benefit provides a principal sum of $100,000 for accidental death or bodily injury from traveling on business for the university. 

In the event of dismemberment, a portion of the principal sum is payable as outlined in the Benefit Coverage table below. 

Voluntary accident insurance plan

This benefit provides additional coverage for accidental death and dismemberment, available in units of $20,000, up to $480,000. Family coverage is available.

In the case of dismemberment, a portion of total units purchased is payable as outlined in the Benefit Coverage table below.

Basic critical illness insurance

This benefit provides a $10,000 lump sum payment by the university to you if you are diagnosed with a covered disease. Additional information can be found in the plan details

Voluntary (optional) critical illness insurance

You can purchase additional critical illness insurance in units of $25,000, up to $300,000. The lump sum will be paid to you if you are diagnosed with a covered condition. You must provide medical proof for units over $25,000 or if applying late. More information and the application form are available on the iAFinancial Group website.

Voluntary spousal critical illness insurance

You can purchase additional spousal critical illness insurance in units of $25,000, up to $300,000. This benefit provides a lump sum payable to you if your spouse is diagnosed with a covered condition found on the iAFinancial Group website.

Note: If your spouse is also a University of Alberta employee, they are eligible to apply for their  own Voluntary Critical Illness.

Medical evidence of insurability is required for amounts over $25,000 or if applying late. An application form is available on the iAFinancial Group website.

Accidental death and dismemberment

You can purchase additional accidental death and dismemberment insurance. Employee or family coverage is available and Human Resource Services will assist you with the claims process. See the breakdown of the Summary of Benefit Costs.
