Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems

As of June 1, 2019, Part IX of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs)  governs the operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAs) or drones.

Please be aware and familiar with the current regulations . Transport Canada is switching to a licensing/registration system for the operation of RPAs. University of Alberta researchers using RPAs/drones in their studies must follow the new regulations. Penalties can be imposed for not following the regulations, which would be the responsibility of a research lab/operator who has violated regulations.

The U of A has general liability insurance coverage for those RPAs/drones owned by the university and operated in accordance with the regulations. Please refer to the Office of Insurance and Risk Assessment for more information.
