Other Worksites

Hazards aren't restricted to laboratories. Regardless of your workplace, implement the following best practices for hazard management:

HSE provides the following services and resources to individuals working in non-laboratory environments:

For all other environment, health, and safety questions pertaining to offsite work, contact HSE.

Student groups take on exciting projects and innovative research. Before you get started, do the following:

1. Conduct a hazard assessment:
  • Identify hazards (such as a hot tool), assess their risk, and assign controls (such as gloves and shields) to minimize danger to yourself and to others.
  • Looking for a hazard assessment template? Use the Hazard Assessment Web App (HAWApp), an online tool for developing, maintaining, and sharing hazard assessments. To set up an account for HAWApp and a site for your student group, e-mail hse.info@ualberta.ca
2. Inspect your work area: Using your hazard assessment as a checklist, conduct scheduled inspections to verify that controls are present. Where the Inspection notes a deficiency or a missing control, resolve that quickly before continuing the hazardous work.

3. Report incidents: After an injury or incident involving property damage, environmental release, or near-miss, complete an HSE incident report. Investigate what led to the incident to determine your corrective actions, and then implement those actions.

NOTE: In case of serious injury, hospitalization, fire, or flood that could or did cause injury, notify HSE immediately by phone: Call 780-492-4855 (the U of A Control Centre) and request a call back from the HSE On-Call person.
