Holiday Pay

All employees at the university observe general holidays. Paid holidays are the actual dates that the following holidays fall on:
  • New Year's Day
  • Alberta Family Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • Heritage Day (civic holiday)
  • Labour Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Remembrance Day
  • Christmas Day

If a paid holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the paid holiday will be observed on the following Monday. These are considered designated paid days off and are treated as a rest day under the terms of the Collective Agreements and Handbooks. Eligibility

All employees listed in the table below are eligible for general holiday pay.

  • All employees at the university observe general holidays.
  • An employee is eligible from the date of hire as long as they were active and accountable on the general holiday
  • Hourly employees will receive stat pay based on their prior earnings
  • Part-time salaried employee eligibility is based on their schedule
  • In order to be eligible, the employee is required to work the scheduled day before and after the holiday

Eligibility for part-time and hourly employees

In order to be eligible for holiday pay, part-time and hourly employees are required to work the scheduled day before, and the scheduled day after, the holiday.

  • An employee is eligible from date of hire as long as they were active and accountable on the general holiday.
  • Hourly employees will receive stat pay based on their prior earnings.
  • Part-time salaried employee eligibility is based on their schedule.

All employees listed in the table below are eligible for general holiday pay. General holiday pay is only paid in the pay period that the holiday occurs in. Depending on their schedules, some part-time employees also receive holiday pay as part of their salary. Refer to the following table:

General holiday pay is calculated at 5% of an employee's wages, vacation pay and stat pay earned in the previous four weeks (two pay periods for semi-monthly or one pay period for monthly) immediately preceding the holiday.

Salary (Part-Time) Support Staff

  • Regular and Auxiliary salary
  • Excluded Support

When the holiday falls on the employee’s regular scheduled day of work the employee receives a paid day off as part of their salary. No action is required.

When the holiday falls on the employee’s unscheduled day of work (regular day off) general holiday pay is calculated at 5% of an employee's wages, vacation pay and stat pay earned in the previous four weeks (two pay periods for semi-monthly or one pay period for monthly) immediately preceding the holiday.

In order to be compensated, the employee, supervisor or timekeeper must record the employee's non-scheduled day in the time sheet of one unit (not hours) for the day using time recording code 072.

When the holiday falls on the employee’s unscheduled day of work (regular day off) general holiday pay is calculated at 5% of an employee's wages, vacation pay and stat pay earned in the previous four weeks (two pay periods for semi-monthly or one pay period for monthly) immediately preceding the holiday.

In order to be compensated, the supervisor or timekeeper must record the employee's non-scheduled day in the timesheet as one unit (not hours) for the day using time recording code 072.

 Meal allowances, breaks and overtime

For support staff, meal allowances, breaks and overtime entitlements when working on a statutory holiday are applied as per the terms of the NASA Collective Agreement.
