UAlberta International - 10 May 2018

On May 7-8, 2018 the University of Alberta and SENER organized the first research workshop on Bioenergy. The implementing partners were Future Energy Systems for the University of Alberta and the Mexican Centre for Energy Innovation (CEMIE-Bio) for Mexico. The objective of this event was to lay down the foundation that can lead to a collaborative research program on sustainable energy in the sector of bio-fuels between specialists from Future Energy Systems and the Mexican Centres of Innovation in Bioenergy. The academic and research goals of this two-day event were to share experiences and expertise on the use of transportation biofuels (bio-alcohols and bio-jet fuel) all along the value chain.

This workshop brought together a total of 30 academics from both countries. Among the participants, the event counted with the presence of Dr. Edgar Santoyo (Director of Technological Innovation, SENER [Mexican Secretariat of Energy]), Dr. Larry Kostiuk, Dr. Alex MacLeod (Senior Science and Technology Advisor, NRCAN [Natural Resources Canada]), Mr. Jesus Arroyo Garcia (Director General of Natural Fibres and Biofuels, SAGARPA [Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food ]) Dr. Jorge Aburto (Head of Biomass Transformation, Mexican Petroleum Institute), Dr. Arturo Sanchez (Bio-alcohols cluster) and Dr. David Rios (Bio-Jet fuel cluster).

The Mexican Energy Innovation Centers (CEMIEs) are groups of public or private research centers, higher education institutions, companies and government entities that have the objective of working together on projects dedicated to developing technologies, products and services which allow Mexico to take advantage of its enormous potential in renewable energy. There are five CEMIEs (CEMIE-Bio, CEMIE-Wind, CEMIE-Geo, CEMIE-Oceano and CEMIE-Sol). Further, the workshop was carried out in collaboration with two of the five CEMIE-Bio clusters: Bio-Alcohols and Bio-Jet Fuels.

On Wednesday, May 9, Dr. Jesus Arroyo invited Dr. David Bressler, UAlberta expert in Bioenergy to present to policy makers from the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) and its research institute (INIFAP [National Research Institute on Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock]).
