UAlberta has been named this year's proud recipient of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Gold Award for Leadership and Pervasiveness in internationalization.
Alongside UAlberta, Florida State University, Arizona State University, and the University of South Carolina were honoured as award recipients at the APLU General Meeting in New Orleans, LA on November 11, 2018.
This award series from APLU aims to highlight and recognize North American higher education public institutions that display extraordinary achievements in the realm of internationalization.
In particular, APLU recognized UAlberta’s leadership and pervasiveness in internationalization reflected through its organizational structure, strategic planning in For the Public Good, support and cohesiveness of international positions across campuses, as well as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives and special efforts such as the President's’ Award for Refugees and Displaced Persons.
Over the past two decades, UAlberta has transformed into an institution that comprehensively enriches its academic agenda through international experiences.
“In our strategic plan, For the Public Good, our U of A community voiced a tremendous value for diversity and inclusivity—and global opportunities and perspectives play a key role in that," said David Turpin, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Alberta. "I see efforts to promote internationalization emanating from nearly every corner of our university, and we are thrilled to support that culture of global engagement.”
“Global experience and collaboration are more important than ever,” said APLU President Peter McPherson, who presented the awards. “We applaud Florida State as well as the University of Alberta, Arizona State University, and the University of South Carolina for their efforts to lead students and faculty in collaborating with, and learning from, their counterparts abroad.”
“We are very proud to receive this prestigious recognition, as International engagement continues to be a key priority for the present and future of UAlberta,” says Dr Cen Huang, Interim Associate Vice President (International) and Vice-Provost, who was on hand at the Annual APLU General Meeting in New Orleans to accept the award on behalf of UAlberta.
