Aga Khan University visits UAlberta

The University of Alberta was pleased to welcome on April 25-26 a delegation of 11 representatives of Aga Khan University (AKU), led by their provost Carl Amrhein.

UAlberta International - 29 April 2019

The delegation included AKU's Dean of Medicine (East Africa), Chief Librarian, Director of University Partnerships, and members of the Institute for Educational Development (IED), East Africa Institute, Human Resources office and Resource Development team.

The AKU delegation met with counterparts to discuss ideas for future collaboration. Also during the visit, the AKU-UA Advisory Committee was launched to provide strategic oversight and direction to the partnership.

AKU and its parent body the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) have had a partnership with UAlberta since 2006. In 2009, His Highness the Aga Khan, who is the Chancellor of AKU, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta.

AKU and UAlberta are now looking to advance the relationship to become pan-institutional. To date, there have been activities in numerous disciplines including medicine and dentistry, nursing, education, ethnomusicology, drama, and libraries. UAlberta is also home to the magnificent Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, opened in 2018 at the University of Alberta's Botanic Garden, thanks to a $25 million gift from His Highness the Aga Khan.
