University of Alberta hosts Energy Policy Webinar with Partners from USA and Mexico

The University of Alberta, through a collaboration between the Energy Systems Signature Area and University of Alberta International, was proud to co-host "North American Energy Policy post COVID-19: Perspectives from Canada, the United States and Mexico."

UAlberta International - 13 May 2020

The economic and market impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak have dramatically impacted all markets and industries, including the oil sector. Demand destruction combined with significant oversupply has caused price collapse and created serious shortages in storage capacity.

This trilateral webinar was organized alongside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Energy, Law & Business at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Energy Initiative at Tecnologico de Monterrey. The webinar included experts from the three countries, who provided an assessment of each country's oil and gas sector reality during COVID 19, and policy recommendations essential for the sector to move from crisis to recovery.

The webinar's panel included:

  • Barry Smitherman, former Texas Railroad Commissioner and Chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas

  • Dr. Luis Serra, Chief Executive of the Energy Initiative at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico

  • Dr. Joseph Doucet, Dean of the University of Alberta School of Business as well as energy and regulatory economics and policy expert

  • Moderator Marianne Kah, Adjunct Senior Research Scholar and Advisory Board member at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University.

With over 400 participants from around the world, many of which included government policy-makers and industry representatives, the webinar outlined the current energy situations in each country, as well as the unique policy approaches to the crisis by respective governments.
