...engaged in recruitment efforts that enhanced the diversity of the campus community.

Incoming students Fall 2019

  • UAlberta welcomed 2,165 new international students (1,373 undergraduate, 792 graduate) from 93 countries in September.

Recruitment virtual events

  • UAlberta International coordinated online recruitment marketing events that facilitated high quality faculty engagement with students, including virtual open houses, faculty-specific virtual events, and topic-specific webinars for recruitment and study permit preparation. 

  • The UAlberta Virtual Open House in November 2019 had 1,033 attendees, an increase of 48% over last year. There were 4,169 booth entries, a 38% increase over last year.

  • Altogether, online events run by UAlberta International garnered more than 3,500 participants.



Recruitment publications

The UAlberta International Undergraduate and Graduate Viewbooks were produced by UAlberta International using graphic design and content coordinated with domestic recruitment materials, contributing to a cohesive set of institutional recruitment materials with a consistent visual identity.

Sponsored student recruitment

The Sponsored Student Program, operated by UAlberta International, continued to identify and build relations with sponsoring agencies as well as deliver specialized services to sponsored students during the application period and through to graduation.

In 2019-20, UAlberta welcomed 310 graduate and 40 undergraduate students from 80 sponsors.

  • UAlberta and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation renewed their agreement at an event hosted in the German Ambassador’s residence, setting the stage for continued academic and research cooperation between both countries via the Humboldt Foundation Liaison Office in Canada (HFLOC).

  • In 2019-2020, UAlberta welcomed three visiting Fulbright Research Chair scholars: two in the Faculty of Arts in the Chair positions “Society and Culture” and “Arts and Humanities” and one in the Faculty of Education. The School of Public Health also established the new Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Healthy Northern or Indigenous Communities. 

    UAlberta now advertises eight Fulbright Visiting Research Chair positions, the most of all Canadian universities. In February 2020, Fulbright Canada CEO Michael Hawes visited Edmonton to further develop ties with UAlberta and promote Fulbright opportunities to researchers.

  • UAlberta received almost 50 applications in 2019 for the ten inaugural placements of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) of India’s Overseas Visiting Doctoral Fellowship (OVDF), a sponsored visiting PhD student program which involves supervisors from both UAlberta and India. UAlberta is one of only two universities worldwide authorized to participate in the OVDF and was the first to sign an agreement for it with SERB in 2016.
