...earned recognition for UAlberta as a global university with a campus culture supporting internationalization.

UAlberta was named the proud recipient of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Gold Award for Leadership and Pervasiveness in internationalization.This award series from APLU aims to highlight and recognize North American higher education public institutions that display extraordinary achievements in the realm of internationalization. In particular, APLU recognized UAlberta's leadership and pervasiveness in internationalization reflected through its organizational structure, strategic planning in For the Public Good, support and cohesiveness of international positions across campuses, as well as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives and special efforts such as the President's' Award for Refugees and Displaced Persons.

UAlberta-Tsinghua Joint Research Centre for Future Energy and Environment

In May 2018, UAlberta officially launched the Joint Research Centre for Future Energy and Environment with Tsinghua University, China's leading science and technology research university. The Centre focuses on developing low-carbon, sustainable energy solutions while tackling global environmental challenges in Canada and China. Following a call for proposals, 7 joint research projects were selected for funding by the Centre's Academic Committee. In October 2018, 16 representatives from UAlberta, including Vice-President (Research) Matthias Ruth and Future Energy Systems Director Anne Naeth, attended a joint research workshop held in China.

UAlberta-ECNU Joint Institute of Advanced Science and Technology

In May 2018, UAlberta and East China Normal University (ECNU) also held a ceremony in Shanghai, which included President David Turpin and Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, to formally initiate the Joint Institute of Advanced Science and Technology, which brings together some of the world's most distinguished scientists in optoelectronic information and advanced nanomaterials. Over 20 UAlberta researchers took part in a joint workshop held at ECNU in June 2018.

RWTH Aachen University

Strengthening its partnership with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, in May 2018, UAlberta hosted a joint research workshop on "Data Science, Machine Learning and Computational Innovation" and a German Research Foundation-sponsored lecture by Dr. Leif Kobbelt, winner of the prestigious Leibniz Prize, Germany's top research award.

Mexican Ministry of Energy

Building on its existing relationship with the Mexican Secretariat of Energy (SENER), in May 2018, UAlberta jointly organized a workshop in Mexico with the Mexican Centre for Energy Innovation (CEMIE-Bio), which focused on research in bioalcohols and biojet fuels and brought together 30 academics from both countries, as well as the Senior Science and Technology Advisor for Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN).

Global Academic Leadership Development Program (GALD)

The GALD program, administered by UAlberta International, welcomed two cohorts of 77 international senior administrators to campus.

Visiting Internship Program (VIP)

The VIP, administered by UAlberta International coordinated six summer/winter programs for 120 students from 19 partner universities.

UAlberta Research Experience (UARE)

The University of Alberta International has continued to connect top international undergraduate and graduate research interns with UAlberta faculty researchers for a 3-6 month internship experience. In 2018-19, 87 students completed internships in our flagship program,the UAlberta Research Experience (UARE), which is co-funded with UAlberta researchers. An additional 101 research experience participants, funded by external sources, received comprehensive support including placement with a host professor and relevant programming.
