Overview

Alberta Abroad is an international work experience initiative of the Government of Alberta that places talented Alberta post-secondary graduates into short-term work placements (externships) with an international host organization. Alberta graduates will develop their specialized skills and gain international work experience through their externships.

Participating in Alberta Abroad is not only an opportunity for you to work abroad and broaden your skills and knowledge, but also an opportunity to live abroad as a 'local'. Discover another culture, people, language, food and traditions. The memories you'll make from participating in Alberta Abroad will remain with you for a lifetime.

Alberta Abroad

This program supports new and recent graduates to:

  1. Enhance your career with paid international work experience.
  2. Explore the opportunity to live in a different country for up to one year.
  3. Expand your network of business contacts.
  4. Receive comprehensive inter-cultural training and pre-departure orientation.

If selected to participate in the program you will:

 

  1. Receive assistance with the visa process.
  2. Pre-departure expenses will be reimbursed (Airfare, Health Insurance, Visa).
  3. Living Allowance while overseas.

When Can I Go?

Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Summer

Duration: 12 months average (starting September, January, May)


Eligibility Requirements

Open to: All Faculties

Level: Undergrad, Graduate, Diploma

3 Eligibility Requirements must be met in order to apply:

 

  • Be a Resident of Alberta, which is defined as a person who is: Born in Alberta; or A student who has graduated from a high school in Alberta; or A person who has lived in Alberta for 12 consecutive months without being a student prior to applying to the program. AND
  • Be a Recent Post-Secondary Graduate, which is defined as: A recent recipient of a degree or diploma (within 24 months of application date); and A recent graduate from an accredited Alberta / Canadian / International post- secondary institution; AND
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident (landed immigrant legally entitled to work in Canada)

Externship opportunities are competitive placements. You'll have to apply for the position and must have the relevant experience, skills and qualifications required by the host organization in order to be considered.

Fees and Costs

All Externships come with funding to cover living expenses. Funding ranges from $3,000 - $5,000 (CAD per month)
