Overview

What Hokkaido has to offer:

  • Is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan
  • There are two exchange programs at Hokkaido University open to international students: HUSTEP (Hokkaido University Short-Term Exchange Program) and JLCSP (Japanese Language and Culture Studies Program).
  • HUSTEP: Designed to provide students with the opportunity to study for one academic year in Japan at Hokkaido University. Participants in this program take a wide variety of courses offered in English in the fields of Culture and Society, Environment, Science and Technology. In addition, participants can pursue independent study research under the guidance of a faculty member. Students also have the chance to study the Japanese language. There will also be an opportunity to take part in numerous traditional and contemporary Japanese cultural activities
  • JLCSP: Aims to provide undergraduate students, who are studying Japanese language or Japanese culture as a major or sub-major, with the opportunity to improve their Japanese language proficiency and to take units on Japanese studies, including Japanese general and applied linguistics
  • Located in Sapporo, the capital of the northern island of Hokkaido. The city is known for its unique history and beauty, relaxed character and is considered one of the most desirable places to live in Japan
  • Yuichi Kurimoto Award for Japan Business Students: Bachelor of Commerce students may be eligible for a fully funded experience. Award value will be dependent on the length of the program and program costs.

Eligibility Requirements

Open to: All Faculties

Level: Undergraduate, Graduate

1) Students need to be in at least their second year at the University of Alberta in order to apply for this exchange.
2) The HUSTEP program requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The JLCSP program does not; its GPA requirements are the same as that of UAlberta (shown through the link immediately below).

Course Information

Language of Instruction: English, Japanese (Participants in JLSCP need at least an N3 level in Japanese. Specifically, applicants should know at least 500 kanji and have the skill to understand conversation spoken at natural speed and read/write simple sentences.)

Please note that the University of Alberta no longer offers a stand-alone Japanese program. It is now part of East Asian studies. Therefore, students may be nominated to the JLCSP program if they have East Asian studies as a major.
