Overview
The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) aim to activate a dynamic community of young global leaders to create lasting impacts both at home and abroad through their intercultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences.
This is a new initiative that is intended to lay the foundation for the next generation of entrepreneurs, public servants, community leaders and academics with innovative minds and a sense of commitment tothe global community.

Securing Our Shared Global Future: Student Leadership for Change
Understanding the perspectives of others and the complexity of global challenges starts with students having first-hand experience and opportunity to learn from community partners in the global south or from leading researchers outside the University of Alberta who are developing solutions to critical global challenges. Through internships on this program, students are immersed in organizations, given responsibility to deliver tangible outcomes for the organization/project and supported in advancing their understanding of the issues, contexts and their personal capacities surrounding the placement.
Internships are developed by the host organization and are designed to contribute to the needs and goals of the organization in addressing key global challenges such as improving healthcare outcomes or enhancing the environmental sustainability of local communities.
If selected to participate in the program you will:
- Be awarded a $6000 scholarship
- Receive University of Alberta credit for their internship placement
- Be recognized as throughout Canada and the Commonwealth as QES global leader
- Gain connections through the QES global student network
- Be engaged with the academic and non-academic community by participating in forums, volunteer opportunities, and environmental discussion groups
When Can I Go?
Terms Offered: Winter, Summer, Fall
Duration: Minimum 90 days (not including travel days), Maximum 8 months
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, though some destinations/host institutions may have their own schedule restrictions.
Eligibility Requirements
Open to: All Faculties
Level: Undergraduate
In order to be eligible for this program you must be:
- a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
- registered and receiving academic credit at the University of Alberta;
- an undergraduate student (normally 3rd or 4th year);
- 35 years or age or under, and the time of application; and
- proficient in the working language at the Commonwealth partner.
Awards will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible students until the present QES program's funds are exhausted, so please apply as soon as you can!
Please note that, in addition to the eligibility requirements above, QES award recipients will be expected to:
- receive credit during their placements, which implies registration in a relevant work experience and/or distance learning course (for example: EXT 300, WKEXP and/or equivalents);
- submit the completed QES pre-departure form , the pre-nomination form in Education Abroad Horizons portal and direct deposit information no less than 3 weeks before leaving Canada (this must be done before first payment of $5400 is issued!);
- conduct community-engagement activities during and/or immediately after the placement abroad, which may include (but are not limited to): seminars, presentations, directly-relating blogging, related volunteer hours, etc. (this activity will be defined in the QES pre-departure form);
- submit the complete returned scholar narrative report after returning to Canada, as well as have finished the post-nomination steps in Horizons , including passport stamps as well as boarding passes (this must be done before the final $600 is issued!).

Placement Opportunities
IMPORTANT NOTE - Internship opportunities at our host partners are subject to UAlberta COVID-19 Travel Policies AND the travel policies of the host institution and country. Please discuss this further with the program coordinator.
The University of Alberta has a number of partners that have agreed to host and provide administrative support to UAlberta students, including (note that the placement process will differ by institutions, as indicated):
- University of Leeds (identify 3-5 professors of interest and include them in your Horizons application Letter of Intent; only hosts students from June-September)
- University of Ghana (currently not available)
- University of Western Australia (identify 3-5 professors of interest and include them in your Horizons application Letter of Intent)
- National University of Singapore (identify 3-5 professors of interest and include them in your Horizons application Letter of Intent)
- Aga Khan University.

Alternatively, outside of the above-listed options, students can independently arrange to go anywhere in the Commonwealth or (pending the approval of Universities Canada) 'developing countries'. Please speak to goabroad@ualberta.ca in advance of submitting your application.

This program is made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada, provincial governments and the private sector.
