Spend four weeks in Northern Ireland, immersing yourself in a unique academic and cultural experience, and pursue your interests in one of three tailored summer school programs.

Irish Studies

The International Summer School in Irish Studies has been running for 19 years. The unique interdisciplinary four week programme is delivered by the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's, the oldest Irish Studies centre in the world. Students have the opportunity to further specialise in an area of their interest, with a choice of two strands: History and Heritage or Literature and Culture. Lectures themes include areas such as; the history of the people on our land, Ireland's place in the world, the extraordinary and powerful history of migration and diaspora, the turbulent, intertwined and sometimes creative relationships between Britain and Ireland and heritage, identity and varieties of Irishness. Conflict Transformation and Social Justice

A unique opportunity to study conflict transformation in a living case study of a society recently emerging from conflict. Hosted by the renowned Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice, a flagship centre for interdisciplinary research in areas of major societal challenge. The Institute fosters collaborations across a range of subject areas to address some of the key global challenges faced in seeking to achieve fairness, security, prosperity, social harmony and progress. Interdisciplinary programme, drawing on teaching from experts in a range of disciplines including Law, Politics, International Studies, Geography, Criminology, Anthropology, Psychology and Human Rights. Students taking the programme will examine the theories and practices of conflict transformation from within local and global perspectives that will include case studies of Northern Ireland, the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia and South America, as well as evaluate how religion impacts upon peace-building.

This new International Summer School capitalises on Northern Ireland's long established culture of storytelling and its significant, diverse contributions to creative industries around the world. Our communities have produced storytellers of international acclaim from the Nobel Prizewinning poet Seamus Heaney and the novelist C.S Lewis to Lisa McGee, the writer of Channel 4's hit TV series 'Derry Girls'.

The contemporary creative landscape is vibrant environment for aspiring writers, producers and performers too with emerging voices given a place to thrive and experiment at Queen's University, which houses the Seamus Heaney Centre, The Sonic Arts Research Laboratory, Brian Friel Theatre and Queen's Film Theatre.

All of the summer schools include:

  • Four weeks based in Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • Guaranteed accommodation on campus for 27 nights from Sunday 21 June - Saturday 18 July 2020
  • Optional credit- bearing programme at Year 2 undergraduate equivalent, with assessment worth the equivalent of five - six US credits or 10 ECTS credits
  • Opportunity to explore Northern Ireland with various cultural and historical fieldtrips including UNESCO World Heritage site the Giant's Causeway, Titanic Quarter, UK's City of Culture 2013 Derry-Londonderry and home of Northern Ireland's government, Stormont Parliament
  • Opportunity to meet and question some of Northern Ireland's decision makers including key politicians and church and community leaders
  • A varied social programme including welcome reception, social nights and 'Ceilidh' Night- a night of traditional Irish music and dance

 


Fees & Costs

Education Abroad Nomination Fee: $250 CAD

QUB Program Fee: £ 2,900 (Approx $4,900 CAD)

  • Includes tuition, en suite accommodation, course materials, field trips (with transportation), and certificate of completion/transcript.

TOTAL PROGRAM COST: Approx. $5,150 CAD

Fees subject to change without notice. Tuition only options are available. 

Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements and any additional costs including visa fees, medical coverage, books and supplies, extra food costs, entertainment and incidental expenses.


Housing

Summer School participants who choose accommodation as part of their QUB program fee, will stay in Queen's brand new student accommodation facility in Belfast City Centre. The new accommodation at BT2 opened in Autumn 2018 and is located just 15 minutes' walk from Queen's main campus (0.9miles). You'll be neighbours with the vibrant city-centre nightlife, popular restaurants and local supermarkets. You will be nestled in the middle of a fantastic coffee culture featuring some of Belfast's most popular independent coffee shops.

Each apartment is comprised of a maximum of 6 en suite private bedrooms and a communal equipped kitchen and living room area with television and sofa. There is also a self-service laundry facility located within the accommodation (equipped with washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards)

Your booking will include:

Kitchen facilities - Your kitchen comes equipped with the following: Kettle, Fridge / Freezer, Oven / Hob, Microwave, Toaster, Crockery, Cutlery, Cooking utensils , Frying pans / Skillets, Saucepans, Baking trays / sheets, Chopping boards

WiFi - Wi-Fi is available both wired and is managed by Ask 4, a specialist UK University internet provider. Details will be provided in your key envelope at check in. If you have any issues with using the Wi-Fi, you can log a call or text with them once you have created an account with them, or you can speak to the accommodation Reception staff.

For students, Queen's Student Accommodation is the sensible choice. It is ideal for making friends, settling quickly into university life and is situated just 15 minutes' walk from the main campus. The site is in a safe location (with 24 hour security) yet less than 5 minutes' walk from the Belfast City Hall and the main shopping district, four miles from George Best Belfast City Airport (with connections to London Heathrow) and 20 miles from Belfast International Airport.
