The Canada-Pacific Alliance Scholarships Program (CPASP) will support and strengthen the Pacific Alliance (PA) and its member countries: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
The five-year program aims to contribute to the capacity of PA governments to sustainably manage and regulate their extractive sectors for the benefit of their countries, including not only economic development, but also environmental stewardship, social justice, and gender equality. This program is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.
Expected results of the project:
- Increased capacity of PA ministries to manage and regulate the countries’ extractive sectors
- Enhanced awareness of PA governments of the skills and competencies required for their public sector professionals to sustainably manage and regulate their countries’ extractive sectors
- Increased awareness and deeper involvement of Canadian universities in developing the skills and capacities of the PA public sectors to sustainably manage and regulate the PA extractive sectors
How does the scholarships program work?
During initial consultation meetings with University of Alberta International, Pacific Alliance member governments identified training objectives and priorities, which informed the creation of a customized training plan for each country. Training plans match relevant short-course, certificate, and professional master’s programs at various Canadian universities to each country’s needs. Participating institutions include: Brandon University, Dalhousie University, Ryerson University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Mount Royal University, Université Laval, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, University of Waterloo, and University of Western Ontario.
Scholarship candidates will be nominated internally by the Pacific Alliance member governments. Successful candidates will receive funds to cover 100% of their tuition fees for the program, in addition to travel, living, and health insurance expenses for the duration of their studies in Canada.
Scholarship recipients will broaden their professional network by connecting with other recipients and Canadian government officials in similar roles. Each participant will also create a professional development plan, designed to ensure the benefits of their training extend to the work of their home government organization.
Who is eligible?
Professionals within the relevant participating ministries, agencies, and government organizations of the Pacific Alliance countries (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) are eligible for the scholarship program on a nomination basis. Before nominations are submitted, candidates and their nominating government body should ensure that they meet the requirements of the program(s) of interest, which can be found through the country’s training plan. This program aims to reach gender equity in its distribution of scholarships.
