UAlberta MOST Joint Research Labs Program

In 2005, under the umbrella of the Government of Alberta Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China (MOST), the University of Alberta established a successful Joint Research Labs (JRL) program with MOST which continued until 2018.

With support from the Alberta government and UAlberta's Office of the Vice-President (Research), the university created the China Opportunity Fund for UAlberta professors to engage in collaboration with counterparts at China's elite State Key Laboratories (SKL), National Laboratories (NL), and other top institutions. Areas of focus were energy, environment, nanotechnology, life sciences, and information and communication technologies (ICT). Over 90 grants were awarded to UAlberta professors which helped to develop strong connections with leading Chinese labs.

While there is no funding currently available, the UAlberta-MOST relationship continues to be strong and opportunities for future funding are under discussion.

In fall 2018, UAlberta and MOST renewed their longstanding Memorandum of Understanding with an intention to explore further collaboration.
