The University of Alberta has a rich array of partnerships and programs with institutions in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, some of which are the result of decades of collaboration.
Our partnership with the Aga Khan University and Aga Khan Development Network is the largest scale and most diverse among those in the region, with collaboration across faculties and departments. In summer 2018, a spectacular new garden was opened at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden: a gift from His Highness the Aga Khan, the garden will be in the Mughal style and will echo the great contributions that Muslims have made to world heritage. The Aga Khan Garden is the first garden in Western Canada, the second in North America, and the 11th in the world to be supported by His Highness.
The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, with funding from Global Affairs Canada, led a project on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in Ethiopia with partners at St. Paul’s Hospital and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health. The project’s goal was to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity in Ethiopia by expanding the reach and reliability of basic birthing services and techniques.
The Faculty of Arts, through the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities Chair in Islamic Studies, awards annually the State of Kuwait Graduate Award in Islamic Studies. A generous endowment by the State of Kuwait, the award is intended for graduate students in the Faculty of Arts whose research projects are focused on socio-cultural, historical, religious and/or political issues in the Muslim context.
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has a long history of engagement with Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
University of Alberta is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network, and thus has established relationships with the University of Ghana, and the University of Capetown. The Faculties of Arts, Nursing and Education have had long-standing student engagement programs with the University of Ghana.
