Exchange Students First Impressions of Canada

Lauren, an exchange student from Australia, is our first author of a series of student stories. Lauren decided to ask her new international friends, about their first impressions of Canada and studying at UAlberta. Her friends originally come from Australia, Germany, Austria and the UK.

What is the biggest difference between your home culture and Canadian culture?

Frankie (Australia): Canadians have an amazing tolerance for the cold! Editor's note: We may appear to be tolerant, but it is really because we know what to wear. Read our winter tips.
Alex (Germany): Canadians are much more open minded to foreigners and try to help wherever and whenever they can.

What has surprised you about Canada?

Alex (Germany): The huge distance between cities in this country.
Lauren (Australia): Everyone says thank you to the bus driver when they get off the bus!
Dan (England): Everything is bigger - from the cars to the food - and of course, the country!

What has been the hardest thing about going on an exchange?

Bethany (England): Getting here and knowing no one or how to get around. Learn how to get around Edmonton.
Isabella (Austria): Stepping out of your own comfort zone and saying yes to a lot of things!

What's one of the highlights of your exchange so far?

Everyone: Exploring the Rockies, seeing wildlife - elk and moose, and getting in touch with Canada's nature.

What's your favourite thing about Canada or UAlberta so far?

Canada:

Yianni (Australia): Meeting people of different cultural backgrounds.
Angus (Australia): Canada's and UAlberta's strong community culture.

UAlberta:

Alex (Germany): The incredible commitment of all the students to UAlberta. We totally enjoyed ourselves at Green and Gold Day, and I admire the close relationship students have with professors.
Bethany (England): UAlberta is a big campus with everything close by. Plus, it's a very green campus and city with access to lots of outdoor activities.

If you could go back in time and give your past self some advice about exchange, what would you say?

Frankie (Australia): Don't bring four pairs of shorts to Edmonton!
Dan (England): Save more money and be prepared to spend it!
Isabella (Austria): Bring a pillow - you won't have one when you arrive.
Eva (Germany): Do not be shy, speak to people and profs, do everything you can and take every opportunity to meet new people.
