Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Processing Delays

Some international students and visitors coming to campus for Fall 2023 are experiencing processing delays which is understandably frustrating.

Processing times posted on the IRCC website are estimates and usually reflect how long it took IRCC to process similar applications in the past. Actual processing times may be longer than times posted for a variety of reasons.

As is the case for any post-secondary institution, the University of Alberta International is unable to expedite the processing of applications; however, we continue to actively advocate on behalf of all students who are affected by delays to IRCC.

Students whose study permit application has exceeded the posted processing time are advised to submit an IRCC web form to inquire about the status of their application.

In a situation where a University staff or faculty member receives an inquiry from a student/visitor about expediting their immigration application process, please direct them to the International Student and Visitor Services (ISVS) Immigration Frequently Asked Questions page. Students with concerns about the processing delays can also contact an International Student Specialist in the ISVS team.
