Where the Rivers Meet Program Coordinator

Position Type - Part Time - Grant Funded  

Salary Range - $30,255.19 to $41,091.91 (pro-rated) per year  

Grade - 08  

Hours - 21 per wk

A confluence (where two rivers meet) is a place that is sacred among Indigenous people. It is a place where elders  and knowledge keepers come to reconnect with the land, replenish their knowledge, and a place where we bring  youth to help them connect with the creator. We hope to show Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ Indigenous youth that they  are welcome and that they have community to go to that honours who they are as a whole person: mind, body,  emotion, and spirit.  

Where the Rivers Meet is a program that is grounded in ceremony and the celebration of two-spirit people and their  multiple identities. In order to keep the program in alignment with its ceremonial roots the core mandates are as  follows: inter-community healing, responsible stewardship, and responsibility to the teachings of the land.  

Reporting to the iSMSS Manager of Programs and Services, the Where the Rivers Meet Coordinator is responsible  for the planning, coordination, and delivery of the Where the Rivers Meet (WTRM) program in K-12 schools,  community organizations, (Edmonton/Calgary) and rural indigenous communities across Alberta, as well as  facilitating the assessment process related to WTRM programming. The WTRM Program Coordinator will also plan,  coordinate, and deliver workshops for staff and students on campus, at other post-secondary institutions, and for  other community groups.  

Currently this position works remotely from home, delivering virtual presentations but there may be a shift to in  person presentations in the coming weeks or months.  

Duties  

  • Ensures the program delivery is pedagogically sound, age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and professionally facilitated and delivered to students. 
  • Provides peer-to-peer education for youth both within the school system and through other community connections (group homes, drop-in centers, etc.). 
  • Responds to booking requests and assesses environmental impacts. 
  • Consults with local community members (such as GSA, teachers, administrators, etc.). 
  • Facilitates workshop sessions that include LGBTQ+ terminology, pronouns, the impact of homophobia/transphobia, colonial history, the ways to support two-spirit/LGBTQ+ Indigenous youth and working professionals. 
  • Provides follow up support for workshop participants after completed sessions. 
  • Recruits, selects, trains and mentors student and youth workshop presenters and panelists. • Networks at outreach/community events to recruit volunteers and advertise program. 
  • Attends weekly iSMSS staff meetings. 
  • Ensures effective program evaluation, tracking, and reporting as required by funders. 
  • Prepares, copies, and coordinates materials and evaluation forms for presentations. Ensures completion of surveys for programs, completes data entry of survey results. 
  • Tracks session data. 
  • Arranges school/classroom and necessary equipment bookings by liaising with appropriate personnel. • Makes travel arrangements and enters travel expense claims, as necessary. 
  • Reviewing and recommending program website updates with content. 
  • General office duties (mail, photocopying, answering e-mail, etc.) 
  • Participates and provides support for iSMSS events such as Pride Week, Mayor's Pride Brunch, etc. • Advises iSMSS staff in conjunction with the Elders Advisory Council on indigenous protocols and best practises 

Qualifications:  

  • Experience working with Indigenous Two-Spirit sexual and gender minority youth and/or vulnerable youth  populations in a classroom or community-based setting is required. 
  • 2-3 years of experience creating and facilitating educational workshops required. 
  • Applicants must identify as Metis, First Nation, Inuit and/or Indigenous to Turtle Island. 
  • High School Diploma; University degree, especially in Education, is an asset. Other combinations of  education/experience will be considered. 
  • Computer proficiency with MAC, MS Office, Powerpoint, Excel, Survey Monkey software, Google  applications. 
  • Strong virtual presentation skills using Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc. 
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent presentation and time management skills. 
  • Ability to effectively organize priorities, problem solve and work independently as well as part of a team. • Self-reliant, organized, and highly motivated. 
  • Police information and vulnerable sector check required. 
  • Class 5 driver's license with access to a vehicle.
