Tracey Bailey

Tracey Bailey, BA, LLB, is an Associate Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre and Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and has over 20 years of experience in the area of health law, policy and ethics. Following law school, she practiced with the firm now known as Dentons Canada LLP; her current practice in the health law area is in the public sector. Her initial work as a lawyer was followed by 16 years in academic settings, the last decade acting as the Executive Director of the Health Law Institute in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. She also taught Contemporary Issues in Health Law, and Public Health Law and Ethics in that Faculty for a number of years.

Tracey's work has largely focused on law and policy reform based on research, both contract and grant funded, to assist governments and organizations in policy making. She is an editor of and contributor to Public Health Law & Policy in Canada, the first Canadian text on public health and the law, and has authored numerous other articles and reports. She was the co-editor of the peer-reviewed Health Law Journal, as well as the Health Law Review. Tracey has served on numerous policy working groups, and clinical and research ethics committees.

She has also been a sought-after speaker and actively involved in teaching, delivering over 425 invited lectures, organizing and presenting at conferences and workshops, teaching in a number of health professional faculties at the University of Alberta, and providing outreach education to health care and legal professionals and members of the public.

She is a current Honourary Executive Member and former Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's National Health Law section. As Chair, she led the organization of the 1st CBA National Health Law Summit and has worked on the organizing committee for each of the three successive Summits. She is also a past Chair and current member of the Executive of the CBA's northern Alberta Health Law Section.
