Faculty wins inaugural Environment, Health and Safety Committee Award

Congratulations to the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Environment, Health and Safety Committee for taking home the inaugural EHS Committee Award

Nicole Graham - 27 November 2017

The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation was honoured at the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Committee Mini Conference on October 24th, taking home the inaugural EHS Committee Award.

Resurrected in 2014, the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation EHS Committee was recognized for their excellence in fostering an environmentally responsible, healthy and safe workplace. With members of the Faculty committee spanning the Faculty, Campus & Community Recreation (CCR), Athletics and the Green & Gold Sport System, a concentrated effort, spear-headed by CCR Director, Cheryl Harwardt, has enabled the committee to achieve this excellence.

"I am very privileged to have a Director in Cheryl Harwardt who, like myself, is a huge proponent of building a safety culture for the Faculty of Phys Ed and Recreation," said Philip Poier, the Faculty's EHS Committee chair. "With her leadership, we have built an excellent team of like-minded individuals who not only understand the merits of mitigating risk within our programs, but willingly promote and share risk management ideas and practices. Winning this inaugural EHS Safety Committee award validates the excellent work that our team is doing."

Since their inception, the Faculty EHS Committee has brought to fruition several environmental, health and safety (risk management) initiatives such as:

  • developing and distributing the Faculty Emergency Preparedness Guide
  • establishing the Faculty Risk Management Website
  • establishing the Faculty Lab Safety Committee
  • developing and managing student employee management training
  • hosting the inaugural Campus & Community Recreation Risk Symposium

"Health, Safety and Risk Management are key to the success of our facilities and programs. We strive to create a safe environment in which our staff and clients play and compete. Each member of the committee has embraced their role in creating this environment. I'm proud of the commitment shown by members to, not only lead in this area but share their knowledge within the Faculty and across the University. That commitment to sharing knowledge directly led to our committee being honored with this award."

Congratulations to the entire Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation EHS Committee on their dedication to sustaining healthy and safe workplaces.
